What slip resistance do you need for a shower, bathroom and patio?
Slip-resistant tiles improve safety wherever water, moisture or dirt can reach the floor. But what slip resistance is suitable for a shower, bathroom, kitchen or patio? Ratings such as R9, R10 and R11, as well as the barefoot classes A, B and C, often cause uncertainty when choosing tiles.
This guide explains the differences and shows which tiles and porcelain stoneware may be suitable for each area. The right surface depends not only on slip resistance, but also on use, gradient, drainage, cleaning and professional installation.

What does slip resistance mean for tiles?
For floor tiles, terms such as slip resistance, anti-slip surface and sure-footedness all describe how a floor covering helps reduce slipping under defined conditions. A textured or rough surface usually provides more grip than a polished one. At the same time, a more pronounced texture can require more effort to clean.
Two different rating systems are commonly used and should not be confused:
- R9 to R13 assess surfaces that are normally walked on while wearing shoes.
- A, B and C assess wet barefoot areas, such as showers or the surroundings of swimming pools.
An R11 tile is therefore not automatically suitable for every walk-in shower. For a wet area used barefoot, the stated barefoot class should also be checked. Many products in our shop carry combined ratings such as R10 A+B or R11 A+B+C.

The higher the R rating, the greater the tested slip resistance under the relevant test conditions. This does not mean that the highest rating is best for every room. A very rough R11 surface may be unnecessary in a dry living area, while a smooth R9 tile may be unsuitable for an uncovered, wet patio.
R9 tiles for dry interiors
R9 tiles are often used in dry residential areas. Depending on the product, they can suit living rooms, bedrooms, hallways or retail areas with little moisture exposure. Their relatively smooth surface is usually easy to maintain. For showers, open patios and floors that are regularly wet, choose a surface that is explicitly approved and offers greater slip resistance.
R10 tiles as a versatile solution
R10 tiles are a popular choice for many private interiors. They combine noticeable slip resistance with comparatively straightforward cleaning. R10 floor tiles are often used in bathrooms, kitchens, entrances and utility rooms. The precise product specification is always decisive. For wet surfaces used barefoot, also check the A, B or C rating.
R11 tiles for outdoor and wet areas
R11 tiles provide greater slip resistance and are particularly popular for outdoor floors. Depending on their design and approval, they can suit patios, balconies, garden paths, entrances, pool areas or commercial spaces. Outdoor tiles must also be frost-resistant and professionally installed with sufficient gradient and effective drainage.
What slip resistance do shower tiles need?
A shower is used barefoot and is regularly exposed to water, soap and shampoo. It is therefore not enough to consider only R9, R10 or R11. For slip-resistant shower tiles, the barefoot classification is particularly relevant:
- Class A: for comparatively dry barefoot areas.
- Class B: for wet barefoot areas, including certain shower and pool-surround applications depending on the specific use.
- Class C: for areas with particularly high requirements, such as sloping pool entries or certain zones with heavy water exposure.
For a private walk-in shower, tiles with a declared barefoot rating are commonly selected. Particularly grippy products may, for example, carry the rating R11 A+B+C. The class required or recommended for a specific project should be determined with the planner or tile installer, taking the use and applicable requirements into account.
Smaller formats or mosaic tiles can offer additional advantages in a shower: the larger proportion of joints can support grip and makes it easier to create the gradient towards the drain. The material, surface and manufacturer's approval must nevertheless be suitable for the application.
What slip resistance makes sense for bathroom tiles?
A normal bathroom floor may occasionally get wet, but it is less exposed than the floor inside a shower. For private bathroom tiles, R10 is therefore often chosen as a balanced solution. R10 offers more grip than R9 without feeling as rough as many R11 surfaces.
Whether R10 is sufficient in an individual case depends on factors such as:
- Will children or older people use the bathroom?
- Is there an open or walk-in shower?
- How often does water reach the rest of the bathroom floor?
- Is the surface walked on with shoes or barefoot?
- What specifications and approvals does the manufacturer provide?
Polished floor tiles can become considerably more slippery when wet. Anyone looking for a non-slip bathroom tile should therefore prefer a matt or textured surface with a suitable rating. Glossy wall tiles, on the other hand, can be used on walls because there is no requirement for safe footing there.
What slip resistance does a patio need?
Patio slabs and balcony tiles are exposed to rain, snow, leaves and sometimes frost. R11 is therefore often chosen for an open patio. A textured R11 surface offers more grip when wet than a typical R9 interior tile. Depending on the product and use, R10 can also be considered for covered areas with little weather exposure.

2 cm porcelain garden slabs are often used for loose-laid patios, pedestal systems or gravel beds. Suitability must be checked for the individual product and installation system. High slip resistance alone does not make a tile an appropriate outdoor slab.

Are slip-resistant tiles harder to clean?
Tiles with greater slip resistance often have a rougher or more noticeably textured surface. Dirt, limescale or cleaning-product residue can therefore adhere more readily than on a smooth tile. This is particularly relevant for R11 and anti-slip finishes.
With the right care, slip-resistant porcelain tiles remain clean over the long term:
- Remove cleaning-product and soap residue completely with clear water.
- Do not use film-forming care products unless the manufacturer explicitly recommends them.
- Use suitable brushes or microfibre products on textured surfaces.
- Carry out a professional final clean after installation.
- Regularly remove leaves, algae and other slippery deposits outdoors.
A high R rating can reduce the risk of slipping, but it does not replace cleaning. Soap film, grease, ice or standing water can make even an R11 tile slippery.

Is R10 sufficient for a shower?
The R10 rating alone is not sufficient to assess a shower used barefoot. You should also check the A, B or C barefoot classification and the manufacturer's approval for the specific application.
Is R11 better than R10?
R11 has a higher tested slip resistance than R10, but it is not automatically the better choice for every room. R10 may be easier to clean in dry interiors, while R11 is often more appropriate for an open patio.
What slip resistance does a patio need?
R11 is often selected for open patios that are regularly wet. The slab must also be frost-resistant and approved for outdoor use and the intended installation method.
What does R10 A+B mean?
R10 describes slip resistance when walking with shoes. A+B indicates additional suitability for certain wet barefoot areas. The ratings are based on different test methods.
Can polished tiles be installed in a bathroom?
Polished tiles are generally suitable for bathroom walls. On the floor they can become slippery when wet, so a matt or textured floor tile with a suitable slip-resistance rating is advisable.
Why do slip-resistant tiles sometimes feel slippery despite an R11 rating?
Soap residue, grease, unsuitable care products, limescale, algae or ice can reduce the grip of any surface. Slip resistance only works together with appropriate cleaning, drainage and use.
